Filth

1. offensive or disgusting dirt or refuse; foul matter.

3. moral impurity, corruption, or obscenity.

4. vulgar or obscene language or thought.

As a kid, you don’t think of the dirt. Fingers grubby from searching for creepy crawlies in the soil. Paint smeared across yourself, scabs on your knees, shouting obscenities without knowing their meaning. Overtime, the dirt becomes impossible to ignore — you’re taught to value cleanliness. Still, the filth coats your skin, stains your conscience, leaves behind grime and a bad taste.

What draws our attention to the filth?

This anthology is made of the stuff under our fingernails, the mold from our kitchen sinks, the curdled bits we’ve been avoiding.

We asked: What is filth to you? What does it mean to be filthy? How do you rid yourself of it all? Do you?
